Iowa Promotes Competitive Integrated Employment through Participation in ASPIRE

Iowa was selected by the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Disability Employment Policy, as one of seven states participating in the second round of the ASPIRE Initiative-Advancing State Policy Integration for Recovery and Employment. Iowa is one of four states that participated in the first round of the initiative, with the overall goal of promoting competitive integrated employment for individuals with mental health conditions by aligning state policies, programs, and funding.

MMI's Adaptive Toys Program Keeps Spreading Skills

A group of 10 families, as well as volunteers from the Munroe-Meyer Institute, gathered at the Munroe-Meyer Guild Institute in early December, all hoping to make the holidays brighter for young family members with disabilities.

New Associate Director Named at The Florida Center for Inclusive Communities

Dr. Boone is a professional dedicated to working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Florida in 2001, completing pre-doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships in pediatric psychology at the A.I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE, and a second postdoctoral year as a LEND fellow at the Westchester Institute for Human (UCEDD).

Call for UCEDD LEND ECHO Organizations

The Wyoming Institute for Disabilities is inviting organizations across the network to join the newly formed UCEDD LEND ECHO Collaborative. These monthly calls are open to any UCEDD or LEND program that is currently replicating or interested in implementing the ECHO model. The collaborative will allow UCEDD, LEND, and partner agencies to share successes, challenges, and strategies in using the ECHO model to build capacity throughout their programs supporting individuals with developmental disabilities.

Clinician, Researcher Lead New Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center in Iowa

Ted Abel, PhD, and Lane Strathearn, MBBS, PhD, are leading one of only 15 federally funded intellectual and developmental disabilities research centers in the country. The new Hawk-IDDRC [Hawkeye Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center] integrates the efforts of researchers in the Iowa Neuroscience Institute (INI) and clinicians in the Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD), part of University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital, to connect basic and clinical research across the lifespan.

Dr. Kuhn Honored with National Innovation Award

Brett Kuhn, PhD, a diplomat of behavioral sleep medicine and professor of psychology at the Munroe-Meyer Institute and UNMC, was honored with the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine's 2022 Outstanding Innovation in BSM Service Delivery Award. Dr. Kuhn directs the behavioral sleep medicine clinic at the Children's Sleep Disorders Center, where he supervises medical residents, sleep fellows and psychology interns in the assessment and treatment of pediatric sleep disorders.

GaLEND Alumna Selected as the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation Public Policy Fellow

Catherine Citta, a 2021 alumna of the Georgia Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (GaLEND) program at Georgia State University, has been selected as the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation's Public Policy Fellow for 2023.

Maine LEND Family Games and Sports are Hot on a Cold Day

It was below zero on Saturday, Feb. 4, but no one was cold at the University of New England in Portland, Maine where 59 people played games, engaged in creative crafts, and fully participated in new sports activities as part of the Maine Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) Family Game and Sports Day! The events were planned as part of the LEND program to promote family-centered inclusion in the community for people with disabilities.

Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute (MI UCEDD) Receives Grant to Support Aging Caregivers of Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

The Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute (MI UCEDD) at Wayne State University has received a two-year, $400,000 grant from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund. The Hope for Aging Caregivers project will work to improve the lives of aging family caregivers of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).

New HDI Project to use Universal Design to Create Inclusive Student Environments

The Human Development Institute's new project will fund universally designed spaces for students at Berea Community School, a high school, to allow students to build meaningful connections. Berea is a Title I school that faces persistent poverty, low educational attainment, and low attendance and graduation rates compared to the state of Kentucky.

Shelby County Relative Caregiver Program at UTHSC Receives $1.87 Million Grant

Following a competitive application process with the TN Department of Children's Services, the UTHSC Center on Developmental Disabilities' Shelby County Relative Caregiver Program (SCRCP) has been awarded a 30-month contract in the amount of $1.875 million dollars. SCRCP provides a broad array of services for relative caregivers and their families living in Shelby County, including family advocacy, short-term case management, emergency one-time financial or start-up assistance, material assistance, teen activity groups, caregiver respite and enrichment, caregiver support groups, educational workshops, and information and referral. Free developmental screenings for children in relative care will be added as a new service.

Survey to Understand the Barriers to Including People with Disabilities in Clinical Trials

The Indiana Institute on Disability and Community (IIDC) at Indiana University is partnering with Disability Solutions and Bristol Myers Squibb to develop a deeper understanding of the barriers to including people with disabilities in clinical trials with a goal of ultimately reducing and eliminating those barriers.

The Inclusive Dojo: HDI training supports martial arts instructors in transforming training spaces

Darrell Mattingly, computer specialist at HDI, developed HDI's Adaptive Martial Arts training course, which teaches martial arts instructors about disability etiquette, universal design and how to adapt their teaching to be inclusive of students with disabilities. Mattingly serves as president of the Adaptive Martial Arts Association, which offers further resources for both students and instructors.

The IOD Welcomes Its First Director of Operations

On March 6, 2023, the IOD will welcome its first Director of Operations, Lisa Leach. Lisa brings new and diverse leadership experience in healthcare and human services to this position. The IOD Director of Operations will provide leadership and support for core functions across IOD projects and programs in the areas of HR, office management, staff development, and technology. She will work as a member of the IOD Management Team.
